Shindzela Walking Safari Camp
Shindzela Walking Safari Camp is a tented safari camp, set in a traversing area within the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa.
Shindzela Walking Safari Camp offers guests an old fashioned Kruger safari. Enjoy an exciting wildlife safari in an unfenced wilderness environment. The camp has no power – instead we make use of solar lights and gas energy.
At Shindzela Walking Safari Camp you are undisturbed by modern conveniences such as television and cell phones, preferring to immerse ourselves in the African Wilderness. There is a waterhole in front of camp.
Shindzela tented safari camp provides guests with a true safari experience in a private game reserve – an ideal way to make the most of your Kruger safari holiday. Shindzela is your home whilst on your safari! .We pride ourselves on offering a relaxed, informal atmosphere; a trademark of genuine South African hospitality.
We do have a swimming pool in camp, and the camp overlooks a waterhole, from where you can watch animals come down to drink – particularly in the drier months of the year. Shindzela is a small tented wilderness camp, and hosts a maximum of 16 guests. Accommodation is in twin or double bed safari tents, each set under thatch tops and on wooden decks
n an effort to offer an affordable safari in South Africa, we have deliberately chosen to forego some of the features that add to the costs of running a safari camp:
We don’t have an African spa… we think that fresh air and the sights and sounds of the bush constitute a spa experience second to none anyway…. We don’t have a high staff / guest ratio: If you fancy some tea or coffee, please help yourself at the tea station in the dining room. Our menu’s don’t feature dishes with culinary terms like “jus”, “compote” or “lightly seared”. Our meals are tasty and homemade, with lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and salads.
Enjoy a traditional South African braai (BBQ) with freshly baked safari bread, or a potjie (stew), cooked slowly over the fire.
Our camp is not built by an award winning architect, nor is it furnished by an interior designer. What you will find at Shindzela Tented Camp is a comfy bed, freshly laundered linen, and décor from local crafters and artists.
Shindzela Tented Camp Accommodation
Shindzela is not a luxury safari lodge; instead it is a comfortable tented bush camp, where you can relax, enjoy our hospitality and immerse yourself in the African wilderness. We love our informal, relaxed atmosphere…
Our rates include your accommodation, all meals, game drive snacks, tea/coffee, complimentary soft drinks, 50mb Wi-Fi voucher and two safari activities daily (game drives, and / or walking safaris, night game drives with spotlight)
We have comfortable safari accommodation in a canvas tent: Each tent has a wooden entrance door, adjustable canvas flaps for windows, and mesh to keep insects out. All tents have a thatch (grass) roof and porch, designed to cool the tents in summer and keep warm in winter. Tents are equipped with 2 x 3/4 beds, solar lighting, all bedding, and towels, private en-suite bathroom with shower, hand basin and flush toilet. In summer, mosquito nets are fitted above the beds.
If you are looking for a Kruger walking safari, or an adventure holiday in the Kruger Park area, consider joining us at Shindzela on a wildlife walking safari.
Our Kruger walking safaris are conducted in the Greater Kruger National Park, in the Timbavati Game Reserve, South Africa. This is arguably one of the most exciting adventure holidays in the Kruger Park.
We offer you a wilderness Kruger walking safari in a big five game viewing area. Shindzela tented camp offers daily walking safaris to guests who are interested in walking; guests electing to participate in a walking safari should be prepared to walk anywhere from 2 – 2.5 hours on a trail.
Your safari guide will give you a thorough safety briefing before your Kruger walking safari, so that you are comfortable with the rules and safety instructions pertaining to you walking trail. Please feel free to ask questions at any time.
Please do remember that you are walking in a wild environment, and it is important to listen to your guide at all times. There is ample opportunity to stop along the trail to examine interesting features of the bush, to observe animals and learn more about the African bush. Photography is allowed on the walking safari, but under the guidance of your safari guide.
Return to camp mid morning, and enjoy a hearty brunch, prepared by our safari cook. It’s then time to relax in camp, before joining us in the dining room at about 14h30 for a late lunch.
During the afternoons, depending on the animal movements in the area, your guide may suggest a game drive and short walk, followed by sundowners and a night safari game drive. Our timetable and activities during your safari are primarily determined around game viewing, so we do include both walks and game drives.
The best time to view game on your walking safari in South Africa, are the early hours of the morning and during the late afternoon. This is when most game is active – during the heat of the day, many animals tend to seek shade and are less active. Night game drives with a spotlight bring you in to contact with nocturnal animals such as Bush babies, Civets, Genets, African wild cats, Porcupines and so forth.
Whilst Shindzela is a big five game viewing area, and we make every effort to seek out the “Big Five” animals during your stay, we focus on the whole safari environment, showing appreciation for all aspect’s of the wilderness – animal behaviour and habitat, trees, insect and plant life, as well as viewing all the other species of game found in the bush. Join us on a walking safari South Africa, and explore this area in the greater Kruger Park.

There is an opportunity to book a Sleep Out experience at the Shindzela Hide. The hide is built overlooking the Main Dam at Shindzela. This is a “back to basics”, adventurous experience, and ideal for those who are dedicated nature enthusiasts.
Guests who have booked a night at the Sleep Out Hide will return to Shindzela camp after the normal afternoon and night safari game drive, and have dinner in the dining room. After dinner, depart with our guide on a short night drive to the dam, and settle in at the Hide.
The Hide is covered in thatch (traditional grass roof), and has a wooden interior deck. It has a 1.2 meter wooden wall railing along all sides. The Hide can accommodate a maximum of 6 guests (plus your armed Ranger who will also overnight in his accommodation along side the Hide).
