Rhino Post Kruger Park Walking Safari

You will experience the Africa bush on a walking Safari in the Southern area of Kruger National Park.

This unique walking safari trail is combined with  luxury tented accommodation.

The walking safari area is located in the center of a 12,000 hectare concession.Very easy to reach by road or air, however once you enter the wilderness area, its far from everything.

This walking safari  only takes up to  eight people only, and no children under 12 are allowed on this trail. This ensures that you will receive the benefit of this remote Safari area.

You will guided by 2 guides, who will immerse you in the ways of the bush ie animal tracks, animal identification, birds, trees, insects, medicinal use plants, and folklore

You can also walk to the Sleep outs, which are elevated wooden platforms about 4metres high. Here  you will spend  the night sleeping under the stars, in the African bush, with the sounds of the African bush to lullaby you to sleep.

A unique walking Safari experience.

Rhino Post Kruger National Park

Rhino Post walking safari details:

South Africa Safari Location:Southern Kruger National Park

Best time to visit:April to November

Approximate per night rate:Varies as to what is included.

Camp/ activities:Walking Safari, Game drives, Sleep outs

The walking Safari camp,Plains Camp, has only four luxury en suite tents with hot running water. You are in the heart of the the African bush.

This quite, intimate, secluded camp, was designed with the days of old in mind.It has the look/feel of the old pioneer days.

It is a serene camp, located an Acacia Knobthorn thicket, and overlooks Timbitene plain and a waterhole.

Overhead fans and 24 hour lighting are provided by a generator and also by a  back-up battery system power. You can  re-charge your camera batteries at specific times during the day or evening. At this walking Safari camp, your needs are considered first.

Of course,a African bush camping experience would not be complete without a outside fire.

When this camp was con structured, there where  no trees cut down during the construction of this camp, and all the structures are either canvas and wood.

The Sleep outs A unique Safari bush experience

Those want to experience a night under the Africa sky, and a walking safari is the way to have this experience, will walk to the elevated wooden platforms, seen below  for  a sleep out under the Africa Sky.

A Africa safari get no better than this.A walking safari, luxury en suite tents, and a sleep out under the stars.

Elevated wooden platforms

Rhino Post Kruger National Park

There are only a few areas in the whole of the Kruger National Park that offers this Safari experience

You will depart from the tented Plains Camp sometime in the late afternoon for the walk to the Safari sleep out area.Your arrival to the sleep out platforms will be early evening time. You will only carry a lightweight rucksack.

Evening Sundowners will be had at a location that overlooks the waterhole

You will be encouraged to participate and to be part of this unique experience. Therefore you will help with  hanging up mosquito nets, as well  fly sheets, if necessary, and in the preparation of the beds.Evening Sundowners will be had at a location that overlooks the waterhole

Dinner is prepared for you on an open fire.this will give you the time to listen to the sounds of the Africa bush. The guides will be with you all the  time.

Possibly you will hear the the rumble of the elephant as they pass by,or the distant roar of the lion.

The next  morning, after a light meal, the return walk back to Plains Camp begins. On arrival, you will enjoy a hearty brunch.

Sleep Out Notes

The Sleep Outs are highly dependent on weather conditions.

PLEASE be aware that should the weather be unfavorable on the day of the Sleep Out (heavy rain) or if there has been heavy rain in the days preceding the Sleep Out, guests may have to remain at Plains Camp (due to the platforms being inaccessible).

Plains Camp strives to keep guests together during their trail, without the inconvenience of different guests arriving and departing throughout their stay.

With this in mind, if the first guests to reserve their trail at Plains Camp request the Sleep Out, then all subsequent reservations will be required to participate. Should all guests not wish to participate in the Sleep Outs; there will be no Sleep Out for the duration of the trail.

A typical Walking Safari day.

A typical day at Plains Camp begins with a mug of steaming coffee and traditional homemade rusks, after which guests set out on their morning walk, following rhino tracks and elephant paths. The length of the walks depend on the interest and fitness of the guests.

Returning to camp, enjoy a leisurely brunch and relax in the cool of the acacia trees, keeping an eye on the waterhole for the breeding herd of elephant that frequently come to drink.

Following high tea, set out again in the late afternoon for a walking safari or game drive and then indulge in a sunset cocktail.

About the Walking Safari

Our walking trails are limited to eight guests who are guided by two armed rangers. Our guides meet the stringent requirements of the South African National Parks and senior guides hold the highest guiding qualification possible in South Africa.

After an introductory brief on the “do’s” and “don’ts” of bush walking safaris, the guide will structure the trail taking into account the fitness level of the group and any special requests.

Departures are before breakfast and again in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, with the average walk being between three and four hours. Walks may be lengthened or shortened depending on the group’s desires and fitness levels.

Our guides will share their wealth of bush culture, the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects, birds and the medicinal uses of plants, local folklore and basic tracking and survival skills. Nothing is predictable in the bush, therefore each safari offers a potentially new experience.

A Typical Safari Trail day

Generally if you start you stay at the lodge ie Rhino Post Safari Lodge, you will experience both morning and evening game drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles.

Then on the day of departure from this lodge after mid morning breakfast, you will be transferred to your luxury tented accommodation at Plains Camp, from where you will be doing the walking Safari.

Generally the time in between game drives is spent back in camp, there is no where else to go to.You can enjoying browsing a small Africana book collection, relax by the plunge pool that overlooks Timbetene Plain and the waterhole, which attracts  zebra, buffalo, giraffe, elephant, rhino and lion.

In the afternoon, high tea is served, which is followed by an afternoon Safari walk, with sundowners. On the return back to camp,a full tasty dinner is served.

You can begin and end  your Walking Safari with  a  few nights of game drives.Soak away after being on the  trail.
