Route 62

Route 62 from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth or vice versa and my personal favourite road to head towards the Garden route.

No longer getting your “Kicks on Route 66”? Then why not enjoy the unexpected pleasures of the Winelands, Breede River Valley and Klein Karoo along Route 62, the longest wine route in the world!

About Route 62

Route 62 is the traveller’s route, which meanders between Cape Town, Oudtshoorn, the Garden Route and Port Elizabeth, offering the shorter, better alternative to the N2 highway.

Prompting associations with the legendary by-way, Route 66, which connected the urban and rural communities between Chicago and Los Angeles, Route 62 links Cape Town to Port Elizabeth.

After being in hibernation for 40 years, this scenic route is now being revived and offers travelers a kaleidoscope of experiences, as it passes through the fruit growing and wine producing towns of Barrydale, Montagu, Ashton, Bonnievale, Robertson, McGregor, Worcester, Ceres, Wolseley, Tulbagh, Paarl and Wellington.

route 62 South Africa

Route 62 includes the wine cellars and estates of the Paarl, Wellington, Tulbagh, Worcester, Robertson and Klein Karoo Wine Routes, making this the longest wine route in the world! However, this is a wine route with a difference, offering travelers not only wine tasting, but a “wine experience”.

Examples of these experiences include unique restaurants and accommodation establishments on various estates, a garden tour at Van Loveren Wine Estate near Robertson where every tree commemorates an historical event or family occasion, or Viljoensdrift, where you can enjoy their wine while cruising on the Breede River on “Uncle Ben”, the riverboat.

In Tulbagh, you have the opportunity to sabrage a bottle of Krone Borealis and savour it while enjoying the spectacular views from Twee Jonge Gezellen Estate.

The Haunted Cellar Tour at the Opstal Wine Estate near Rawsonville will combine your appetite for wine, food and adventure, as you embark on a spinechilling journey, which will haunt your fondest memories long after bloodcurdling sounds from the underworld have ceased echoing in your ears and the last wisps of cobwebs have been brushed from your hair

Ostrich Farm Oudtschoorn part of a Garden Route tour.

From visits to wineries and game reserves, tribal art and cultural tours, hiking trails and mountain climbing, 4×4 routes and canoeing expeditions, horse riding or fishing, Route 62 caters to your every need, even offering a diverse range of conferencing and incentive experiences, from 5-star conference facilities, to more “African” conferencing and team building.

All who have traveled here agree that few places in the world are as stunningly beautiful as the scenic Route 62, so head out and embark on a unique adventure, one that’s sure to tantalize your tastebuds.
