Rovos Rail Train Journey.
For many visitors to South Africa,what better way to experience the country than on the RovosRail 48-hour weekly Luxury train between Pretoria and Cape Town.
This approximately 1 600- kilometre journey is a meandering through South Africa as you will travel through the grasslands of the gold-rich Highveld, to the beautiful, emptiness of the Great Karoo,through beautiful mountain ranges,to the valleys of the Cape Winelands.
The end of the Journey’s is in Cape Town,with the imposing Table Mountain overlooking the city,or in Pretoria the Jacaranda City.
One of the highlights of the north- and southbound routes is a visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein.
This is an authentically perfectly preserved Victorian Village,founded as a refreshment stop in 1890.
The train also stops in Kimberley,where you will be able to enjoy a tour of the city,and visit the Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole,the world’s largest man-made excavation.
Pretoria to Cape Town
DAY 1 PRETORIA
15:00 Depart Rovos Rail Station, Pretoria. Travel across the goldfields of the Witwatersrand. Guests may freshen up in
their suites before joining fellow travelers in the lounge car or observation car at the rear of the train.
19:3o Dinner is served in the dining cars. Overnight on board. Dress: Formal
DAY 2 KIMBERLEY
07:00 Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 09:45.
09:30 A shallow lake appears on the right-hand side of the train where, on most occasions, there are spectacular
flocks of Lesser Flamingos (approximately 23 000).
09:45 Arrive Kimberley. Disembark for a tour of the city, Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole.
12:30 Depart Kimberley. Travel through the Karoo.
13:00 Lunch is served in the dining cars.
16:30 Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car at the rear of the train.
19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars. Overnight on board. Dress: Formal
DAY 3 MATJIESFONTEIN
07:00 Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00.
08:00 There is a chance for guests to disembark the train at Whitehill Siding and walk the five kilometers into
Matjiesfontein. A member of staff will accompany the group. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.
08:25 Disembark at Matjiesfontein for an opportunity to stroll through the historic village. Of special interest is the
museum on the platform and a collection of historic cars and railway carriages to the right of the Lord Milner Hotel.
10:30 Depart Matjiesfontein.
12:00 The train arrives at the first of four tunnels on the pass. The first tunnel is 13.5 kilometer long so guests are to
be careful when walking through the train and may wish to turn on necessary lights.
13:00 Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train climbs ±750m down the escarpment through the Hex River Valley.
16:30 Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car at the rear of the train.
18:00 The train arrives at journey’s end: Platform 24 at Cape Town Station.
Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00.

14:30 Arrive Kimberley. Disembark for a tour of the city, Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole.
16:00 Depart Kimberley. Ten minutes after leaving Kimberley, a shallow lake appears on the left-hand side of the train
where, on most occasions, there are spectacular flocks of Lesser Flamingos (approximately 23 000).
16:30 Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car at the rear of the train.
Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Klerksdorp. Overnight on board.
19:30 Dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Klerksdorp. Overnight on board. Dress: Formal
DAY 3 PRETORIA
07:00 Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00. Travel northeast through the goldfields of the Witwatersrand.
12:00 The train arrives at journey’s end at Rovos Rail Station, Pretoria.
